Maybe you know the game Flight Control for iPhone? Flight Control is a great hit on the iPhone. It is a game for iPhone where you take control of an airport and reroute planes to land in specific zones. The Windows Mobile (W)VGA game is nearly an exact copy of Flight Control for iPhone. Though, is it exactly as good as the iPhone game? You can find it out in this review.

The same people that brought us Tower Defense for Windows Mobile are accountable for this game, The game Tower Defense was valued as a great game with smooth and addictive game play and sublime graphics. Flight Commander looks great at first hand, just like Tower Defense. The game has cartoon artwork that genuinely fit the genre. The main menu for some reason has some well rounded ladies that well, don’t really try to hide their female shapes. Even though they are just drawn, it does not seem to have a proper purpose to show the flight attendants like this. These round breasted females in the menu feel out of place and there isn’t really a proper ground for them to be there.

There is an option in the menu to view your highscore that can really help to motivate yourself to keep improving it. Like the game Tower Defense this Windows Phone title has a resume option that allows you to continue previously started games. It proves that the people behind Colorstone genuinely understand modern day mobile gamers. You don’t constantly have enough time to complete a game and being able to continue it later genuinely helps.

In this Windows Mobile game you have to land choppers and planes on landing slips. There are helicopter pads, air strips and strips specially made for water airplanes. As you start playing the choppers and airplanes start to spawn on the sides of your airport. As new planes or helicopters enter the airspace you will see little blinking lights that alert you to their presence. In this Windows Mobile WVGA/VGA game you land the crafts on the strips to ‘get rid of them’. You can land the planes by drawing them to the landing strips or chopper pads. Landing a plane increases your score and you can do this until your lives run out which is caused by airplanes crashing. By default you can only have one crash before the game ends, but for newcomers you can set this to 4 and make some mistakes before ending the game. As far as game play goes you might wind up preferring to use the stylus over your finger to control the game. The stylus offers more speed and accuracy something that can’t be done on the iPhone version of the game considering this is a capacitive device.

Because the game uses OpenGL ES for graphical acceleration the newer mobile phones can make use of this and it shows in the games looks. The use of OpenGL ES makes the game silky smooth, enjoyable and it offers great game play. The only real downside to this game is the price. But do we really have developers to blame for this? If Microsoft had better developer support in their SDK’s the games would take a lot less time to code and could be made for less money. Flight Commander for Windows Mobile is all in all a truly great experience on your Windows Mobile smartphone. All we can say is: Hats of to Colorstone Ltd. for another great game.

This game was tested and found to be working on the following mobile devices:
HTC Touch HD
HTC Touch Pro 2
HTC Touch Pro
HTC Touch Diamond 2

These days Windows Mobile gaming is getting better and better. Game developers have started picking up the pace and making mobile WVGA games that actually have been using some of the newer devices hardware acceleration capabilities like OpenGL ES. Color Stone Ltd has done such a thing and made two games for Windows Mobile that look, play and just seem polished overall. The two games were played on a Touch HD and a Touch Pro 2, these devices use basically the same hardware like many of the other Windows Mobile WVGA phones out there and should work on any of them (if your chip supports OpenGL ES it should work).

Flight Commander
In flight commander you get control of the air space around an airfield. You have to make sure that the planes land and don’t crash. I’m sure some of you recognize this from the popular iPhone game called Flight Control. The game is basically a rip of that game, though it does not really matter a fun game is a fun game. And Windows Mobile could use some more as a platform, especial for WVGA devices. There are different types of planes that you have to land on the different air strips. The game is challenging fun and looks great. The only downside is that there isn’t a demo available, I’m sure a lot of you would like to try it before you buy it, although if you don’t like the game you can get a refund as far as I know. You can find Flight Commander here

Tower Defense
Nearly as long as there are games there have been tower defense games. And this game really is the best of them all, well for the Windows Mobile platform at least. The game has pretty deep strategy as you can choose from 6 different towers to defend your base with, additionally you can upgrade each tower up to 3 times. Choose wisely what towers you put down it can change the course of battle greatly. Every battle you do is different and thus the game has a high replay value overall. The graphics look lush and gritty at the same time and as for a WVGA Games It feels great to play it on this resolution. Again, like Flight Control there does not seem to be a demo version available. If anyone finds one please do let us know and they will be linked on this page. For now if you are interested in the game you can find Tower Defense here together with some more screenshots. Enjoy the gaming!
